One of the challenges when first opening a dollars store is ordering the right amount of merchandise to fully stock the store. Then, just as the doors open and you begin to make sales, you quickly find the shelves look bare. The fully-stocked appearance you seek is really for your customers. They will buy more, and return more frequently when they believe they are entering a fully-stocked store. The tips that follow focus on establishing the appearance of being fully-stocked at times your store is not. While these will provide some short-term relief, it is important to obtain the merchandise you need and to get that merchandise on display quickly. Over the long-term customers will begin to realize what you are doing. When that happens, sales will begin to decline as customers buy less and return to your store less frequently.
1) Keep the front-facing end caps filled. When opening a dollar store it is important for customers to see fully-stocked shelves as they enter your store. Be sure the front-facing end caps are filled to create that appearance. Doing this allows everyone entering through the front door to look across the store at all of the front-facing end caps and see lots of merchandise.
2) Pull, spread, and straighten gondola stock. Are you using 8″ peg hooks? Replace them with 4″ peg hooks and the merchandise covers twice as much area. After opening a dollar store you will discover that many times there are larger items such as gift bags and larger packaged items that can also be spread to cover areas without merchandise.
3) Remove all stock room back-stock to the floor. If you are running low on merchandise, then the last place you want even a single item is in the back room. Even if it means there are huge quantities of one or two items, just place them in different locations throughout the store to reduce the overall affect of having so much of one item, yet being out of so many other items.
4) Fill merchandise from the front of the store to the rear of the store. Once again the focus is on placing the majority of the merchandise where customers will see it. The front of the store will always have more customers than the rear. So pull merchandise forward in your store to give the illusion you seek.
5) Change displays frequently. Move the merchandise on end caps every other week. If you lack new merchandise go ahead and move end cap merchandise from one end cap to another end cap across the store. By following this process the merchandise on 50% of the end caps in your store will appear to be new every week. This work should be done on a specific day each week to guarantee that it happens. Train stock personnel so all end caps are correctly stocked.
When opening a dollar store it is critically important to maintain adequate inventory levels at all times. However when events occur that mean you have lower inventory levels it is important to take action and camouflage the problem until new orders can be received. These 5 actions will help accomplish this for you. Give them a try!
